Dear Campus Community,
The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, as well as the deaths of a number of other African Americans in Indianapolis, Louisville, south Georgia, and elsewhere, prompt me to reach out to our campus community. At a time when so many Black Americans—our friends, our neighbors, our families—have lost loved ones to the novel coronavirus, this misery is compounded by the violence that continues against Black Americans across the country.
These tragic events reinforce my already strong belief in the vital importance of building an inclusive and welcoming environment that recognizes and respects people of all backgrounds and experiences. I have said before and will say again that at IUPUI, we are unwavering in our commitment to ensuring a safe and civil environment for faculty, staff, and students.
I remain committed to that goal and hope you will join me in doing whatever we can to confront racism, sexism, and other barriers to our growth as a community and our progress as a nation.
Take care and stay well,
