Dear Members of the IUPUI Community:
Yesterday, our campus community was faced with a series of incidents unprecedented in my 30 years on the IUPUI campus. I understand the fear and anxiety that those armed robberies caused, especially as the holidays near and students are preparing for – and taking – final exams.
Those incidents serve to remind us that we are on an urban campus where such situations, while unfortunate, will happen. In response to yesterday's events, which occurred near campus, the IU Police Department Indianapolis increased the number of officers on patrol, and the campus also provided additional options for students using the IUPUI Safewalk Program. For those students who were unable to take exams, please check with your dean's office for alternative arrangements.
Our police department works closely with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the Indiana State Police and other law enforcement agencies throughout Indianapolis to ensure your continued safety. In addition, the IUPUI Emergency Response Team coordinates with IU Emergency Management & Continuity and IU Communications to share urgent information with the campus community.
All of these groups and others work together to review and refine our campus’s emergency response system, but personal awareness remains a key element in avoiding dangerous situations. To that end, I encourage you to check your IU Notify settings via https://one.iu.edu. I also recommend you review the safety tips that appear in Inside IUPUI.
At IUPUI, the safety of our faculty, staff and students is paramount.
Sincerely,
Nasser H. Paydar, Ph.D.
