Vanessa Summers (D) became a member of the Indiana House of Representatives in 1991 after she was elected to fill a vacancy left when her father, Joseph W. Summers, passed away. She represents the citizens of Indiana House District 99 at the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis when the General Assembly is in session.
Among Rep. Summers’ primary legislative responsibilities is her work as chair of the Indiana House Democratic Caucus. She also serves as a member of the Indiana House Standing Committee on Family, Children & Human Affairs; the Select Committee on Government Reduction; and the Statutory Committee on Interstate and International Cooperation. She was recently named as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Public Health, Behavioral Health and Human Services and the Interim Study Committee on Public Policy.
Rep. Summers is an active member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha Mu Omega Chapter, Top Ladies of Distinction, and Light of the World Christian Church.
She graduated from the St. Mary Academy for Girls and the Mid–America College of Funeral Service.
